Happy 2016! We have a bunch of fresh, new faces in our Secondary Science Methods (GS4403) course eager to become the best science teachers out there. Here is the Hickory cohort:

| Ms. Keaton |
 |
| Mr. Nakota |
 |
| Ms. Anna |
 |
| Ms. Justin |
Below they comment on their 5 goals for their students...
1. I want each student to find out his or her personal interests in science.
ReplyDelete2. I want all students to consistently make scientific connections to real life.
3. I want each student to learn lifelong safety skills for labs and chemicals.
4. I want my students to realize that science is necessary, interesting, and fun.
5. I want my students to learn "big picture" concepts about the world that they see in everyday life (weather, photosynthesis, etc.).
These are well though out, good job Anna
DeleteMy goals for students within the science classroom are:
ReplyDelete1) Development an appreciation for the Science around them
2) Use the scientific method in and out of class
3) Learn about scientific developmentstudies in the news
4) Relate what we learn to life outside of class
5) Break down and fix any misconceptions
Okay, this is a great start, but you need to fix #3, I think there is a typo. Also, try to see how you could reword #2, since we are moving away from teaching students about the "scientific method", because there is not One valid method. Instead, we want to teach them about the nature of science and help them develop science and engineering practices.
DeleteMy five goals for my students are…
ReplyDelete1. My students will leave my classroom after 180 days knowing more information about how our world works than they knew when they walked through my door on day one.
2. My students will better understand how important science is to their everyday lives.
3. My students will feel confident about their abilities to understand and explore various concepts of science.
4. My students will not feel limited or inadequate for their lack of knowledge, but rather question and desire/seek to learn more.
5. My students will work with me and one another to create a positive learning community in which everyone puts forth their best effort and feels safe and excited to ask questions and learn.
Great, very thorough. See if you can incorporate "Science practices" in that language somewhere.
DeleteFive Goals for my students:
ReplyDelete1. Want my students to feel like they are a part of a community.
2. I want my students to feel like they have learned more than content knowledge in my course.
3. I want my students to be able to leave my classroom knowing that I have their best interest at hand.
4. I want my students to see the sheer importance of science and how it impacts their daily lives.
5. I want my students to feel comfortable with their own abilities and apply them to their full potential.
Great, see if you can expant on #2 a bit to add what else you'd like them to leave with (ie. science skills such as critical thinking, observation, argumentation, etc)
ReplyDeleteHello all! Dr. Geib here! I discovered a rogue link to this blog in my GS 4403 ASULearn site, so I thought I'd say hello! It looks like everything is going well. Excellent goal lists! Take care!
