Goals for Our Science Students

Our group of middle and high school science teachers-to-be shared their goals for their science students in the lesson yesterday. They will be revising them at the end of the course. We are also taking this opportunity to learn about blogging with students and anticipating issues before they come up (e.g. students must understand the difference between a post, a comment and a reply; emphasize that everyone's name (or chosen nickname) must be on their comment/ reply, there should be no "anonymous" comments (unless you as a teacher decides a specific activity is better suited for anonymous replies); the importance and usefulness of labels/ tags, etc.

Here are our lists of goals. Please feel free to comment on your classmates' list:

    -I want my classroom to be a community rather than just a group of kids
    -I want students to have an interest in science after being in my class
    -I want students to feel knowledgeable on the content I covered in class
    -I want students to feel comfortable coming to me or other teachers for help

    1. Be empowered in the possibility that they can explore using science.
    2. Be able to analyze science in the media.
    3. Be able to know how to research inquiries and discover new information.

  4. Goals for Ben Vogler's classroom:
    1. Be analytical
    2. Know why biology is important and why the state requires you to know it.
    3. How science relates to them and their future career choices.
    4. Understand that we don't know it all, there are always things that can be discovered.
    5. That if you're not successful in this coarse, that science is still for you.

    4. Students should understand science more after taking this class.

  6. 1) To be literate beings that are able to hold conversations and interact in social environments.
    2) To be functioning citizens that are able to live and work in the real world.
    3) To leave with a new knowledge of science and an eye for curiosity that they can take with them during the rest of their lives.
    4) To be able to inquire and experiment to find solutions to everyday problems.
    5) To have a basic knowledge in science that will be relevant to their daily lives no matter what they are doing.
    6) To leave with a lasting memory from class that they can look back on and smile at.

    1. Form wonder and curiosity about how science affects them.
    2. Know how chemistry affects every day life.
    3. To read and interpret science texts.
    4. To be able to work in a group and build collaboration skills through labs and projects.
    5. Learn how to be a proactive student and take more responsibility for their learning.

  8. 1. Find at least one thing that you enjoyed during the course.
    2. Gain some form of social skill during the class. (IE: learn to better articulate an argument)
    3. Learn to appreciate the work that you, and your fellow students, do. (IE:understand that writing a paper will help you develop as a student and writer)
    4. Gain some sort of curiosity about something we covered in class. (IE: Why are sunsets different colors?)
    5. Feel confident in what you have learned.

    -Be excited about learning about our world

  14. 1) Develop the ability to be open to new concepts that may contradict what you previously heard or assumed to be true.

    2) Grow and mature in your knowledge of science but also in your personal relationships.

      4) Learn to be an active part of the classroom community and the community in which you live.

      5) Learn to work together, despite differences in personality or opinion, for a common goal or good.

      6) Understand that science itself is neither good nor bad, it is the way in which science is used that can be arbitrarily assigned as good or bad.

  16. - For students to leave my class with at least one area of interest in Science.
    - I want my student to develop an inquiry based approach to their daily explorations, instead of being satisfied with the answers that adults give them.
    - For students to have an in-depth understanding of topics covered in class, and realize the connections between all topics.
    -For my students to believe in their ability to be successful in the science classroom and not fear science concepts because of the assumed difficulty.
    - I want students to use science across the curriculum and engage in stimulating conversations with the knowledge that they've gained in my class.

    My students will...
    1. Develop an appreciation for the scientific process and use this process with curiosity to increase their science education.
    2. Take an interest in the sciences in general and be self-motivated to learn about multiple branches of science.
    3. Learn to respect others, work well in groups, and communicate effectively.
    4. Learn proper lab attire, etiquette, and safety and be able to work efficiently in lab.
    5. Understand and master the content taught in class lectures.

    1. Be able to apply and relate scientific concepts and material to everyday life (and vice versa).
    2. Learn the importance of correctly following the Scientific Method.
    3. Discover how to look critically at any new information they are introduced to to see how valid its supporting statements are.
    4. Learn that asking "why" is one of the most important attitudes anyone can maintain. To develop an innate curiosity is essential to becoming a well-rounded adult.
    5. More than simply learn content, I want my students to learn how to learn.
